Learning a New Language with Mobile Devices (mobile Learning)

Learning, knowledge and information have been changing in the last decades. As information becomes more available through mobile devices, we can reach it from anywhere and at any time. Learning has become a life-long process. Constant search for new information and knowledge in combination with our nomadic way of living makes learning different from what it used to be. People adapt to the constraints and problems they face in complex, dynamic, often technology-based environments in which they perform tasks that require processing external information resources. This master thesis is a design of a pilot study to learn a new language using existing mobile hardware and software. This design will take advantage of applications that improve the search for and gathering of information. The purpose is to make learning a new language a situated learning. Using distributed knowledge to enrich the environment so that learning becomes a commune daily activity. This master thesis will try to show the possibility of improving learning, specially learning a new language, with the existing technology. SAMMANFATTNING Kunskap, information och inlärning har förändrats de senaste årtionden. Det är möjligt att nå information var som helst och när som helst eftersom den blir alltmer tillgängligt via mobila enheter. Att lära sig har blivit en livslång process. Konstant sökande för ny information och kunskap, i kombination med vårt nomadiska liv, gör inlärningsprocessen annorlunda från vad den var tidigare. Människor anpassar sig till de svårigheter och hinder som de möter i komplexa, dynamiska och för det mesta teknologi baserade miljöer, var de utför uppgifter som kräver hantering av externa informationsresurser. Detta examensarbete är en design för en pilotstudie för att lära sig ett nytt språk med hjälp av befintliga mobila hårdoch mjukvara. Designen tar fördel av applikationer som förbättrar sökandet och samlandet av information. Avsikten är att göra inlärningen av ett nytt språk till ett ”situated learning”. Den använder distribuerade kunskap för att berika omgivningen och göra inlärningen till en vanlig, daglig verksamhet/aktivitet. Examensarbetet visar på möjligheter att förbättra inlärning, i synnerhet inlärning av ett nytt språk, med hjälp av befintlig teknologi.
